Edwards Road Baptist Church began as a mission in July 1960 with a Vacation Bible School which was followed by a series of special reaching services under a tent on Cahu Drive. The mission was a joint project of the Greenville Baptist Association. The Mission was under the advisory and monetary sponsorship of First Baptist Church, Greenville; First Baptist Church, Taylors; Brushy Creek Baptist Church; Hampton Heights Baptist Church and White Oak Baptist Church.
The "Cherokee Forest Mission" started holding services in a picnic shelter located on Cahu Drive. Winter was moving in so the location had to be moved to a large frame house located at 705 Edwards Road. The house has since been demolished. The name "Edwards Road Baptist Chapel" was adopted at that time and J. Henry Simpson was called to be the Interim Pastor.
On April 9, 1961 William Palmer was called to serve as Pastor. In the fall of 1961 we started holding services in the Lake Forest Elementary School.
On Sunday, May 13, 1962 Edwards Road Chapel was constituted into a Church and known as Edwards Road Baptist Church with 233 Charter Members. In December, 1962 the Church called its first full time Minister of Music, Jerry Brown and his family. Rapid growth continued and on the Sunday after Easter, 1964 the Church moved into its new building which consisted of a Chapel and a Sunday School Building. At this time our Church membership was 427 and Sunday School enrollment was 539. Our first Church budget was $39,000. After our "Forward Program" we over pledged our budget and adopted a $70,000 budget.
Our present site was acquired when Edwards Estate was settled and five acres were awarded to us with the provision that we maintain the cemetery which is located on the site. Our first Church site on Howell and Edwards Road was traded for additional seven acres surrounding our present location.
During October, 1971 the new Family Life Center was dedicated and ground was broken for the new Worship Center and Education Building which we entered on Sunday, December 2, 1972.
Since the founding of the Church there have been five Pastors, William Palmer, Haywood Cosby, Earl Crumpler, Stephen Corts, and Aaron Rayburn.
